The Foods You Eat Impact the Health of Your Teeth

Posted on 2/20/2019 by Doctor Schwei
The Foods You Eat Impact the Health of Your TeethFor healthy gums and teeth, it is important to choose the foods that you eat wisely. An unhealthy diet will put your mouth at risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and a host of other dental health problems. By making good nutrition a priority, you can protect your oral health.

Sugary Foods Contribute to Tooth Decay

Most people know that sugar is bad news when it comes to cavities and decay, but that doesn't just mean candy. Almost all foods contain sugar to some extent, but items like crackers, white bread, and other foods high in simple carbohydrates are bad news for your oral health.

Acids Wear Way at the Enamel

Another major problem when it comes to oral health is the consumption of acidic foods and drinks. Soda is arguably the biggest culprit. Not only is soda high in sugar, but the acid content makes it especially dangerous to the teeth. Even diet soda is bad news, as the acid will wear away at the enamel, making the tooth vulnerable to decay.

A Nutritious Diet Keeps Gums Healthy

A diet high in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients is crucial for good oral health. If your body lacks certain nutrients, it can be difficult for the gums to resist infection. Gum disease may result, and in the most severe cases, tooth loss can occur. Dental researchers believe that gum disease progresses more quickly amongst patients with poor nutrition.

Snacking Can Harm the Teeth

In addition to the food that you eat, the time in which you eat them is also important for oral health. Snacking throughout the day increases the amount of time your teeth are exposed to bacteria and acids. If you choose to snack, make it a nutritious choice.
