How Long has Dentistry Been Practiced?

Posted on 9/20/2018 by Doctor Schwei
How Long has Dentistry Been Practiced?Dentistry is the treatment of diseases and conditions that affect your teeth and gums. This is 'common knowledge' today as most of us are familiar with visiting our dentist every 6 months (if not more often).

However, what isn't such 'common knowledge' is where or how all this began – the history of dentistry.

The History of Dentistry Highlighted

It's interesting to note that the first mention of dentistry dates to 5000BC when a Sumerian text says 'tooth worms' caused dental decay. Of course, we know that this isn't true as we've done a lot of research and grown a lot over the years but it's interesting nonetheless.

The First Dental School

On February 21, 2018 Dr. John M. Harris opened the first dental school in Brainbridge, Ohio. This was the first step towards establishing dentistry as a profession. It was followed by the opening of the first dental college, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, in Baltimore, Maryland in 1840.

The First American Dental Association (ADA) Award

In August 1859 William Henry Atkinson founded the American Dental Association in Niagara Falls, New York. It handed out its first award to Dr. Mandel in 1931. He's world-renowned for his research on saliva and for establishing the first Division of Preventive Dentistry. Today the ADA continues promoting public oral health care, making it accessible to everyone.

Dentistry Today

Dentistry has grown and changed a lot over the years. It started with some very rudimentary toothache remedies in 1700BC and has since grown into what we know today. Many of the treatments and remedies that were used back then are still used today – simply improved upon over the years. So, when you call our office for an appointment, think back with thankfulness over the history of dentistry. We look forward to sharing its remedies with you soon.
